Call for Wood-Themed Art
In April 2009 Altered Esthetics will be FIVE! To celebrate the event and pave the way for another five years, we're having a big party and fundraiser. Call for Art - I Heart Northeast
 The Northeast Minneapolis Arts District is home to over 400 artists, studios and galleries as well as countless historical landmarks and fabulous brownstones. The I Heart Northeast show will feature artwork about our awesome Northeast Minneapolis.

Altered Esthetics will be hosting a commemorative "arts community" photography exhibit comprised of Northeast photos present and past. This exhibit will be on display during the month of May, including Art-A-Whirl.
To participate, simply send a copy of your photo to Altered Esthetics, or scan and email your photo to contact@alteredesthetics.org and we'll print it for you. If you have a historical photo you'd like to share that needs special care, please contact us and we'll make the necessary arrangements.

Missing Sculpture
My friend and fellow artist Kevin had this stolen from the building we are in.
I'm posting this info for him; any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Original Sculpture piece missing from Q.arma building - 1224 Quincy Street NE..
On Saturday Nov.14 or Sunday Nov.15 this sculpture was taken from Gallery Q first floor.
It is a wood carved original on a wood and stone base approx 16 inches high.

Level_13 opens Friday at Altered Esthetics!
 Level_13 Another round of art and music from the video game generation Altered Esthetics is proud to announce the opening of our third biennial Video Game Art show, Level_13! Level_13: The Secret Level will offer a look at the way classic video games have influenced an entire generation of artists. MPLS vs STPL Group Ride
 MPLS vs STPL Why the split between two fabulous art communities? Creative solutions to an artistic rivalry; the MPLS vs STPL exhibit opens at Altered Esthetics in Northeast Minneapolis and the Black Dog in Lowertown Saint Paul.
Join us on a group bicycle ride to see both halves of the exhibit.

Call for Artists- Bitter Fruits: A Study of Woman as Object in Art

Bitter Fruits
A Study of woman as object in art.
The history of art has largely been written by works that resulted from and served to perpetuate the male gaze. These works tell us a great deal about the roles women have played in art and society, and also about how women are viewed today. Altered Esthetic's February exhibition, Bitter Fruit, will examine how contemporary artists--both male and female--deal with this shared history, and where it has left us. We hope to illuminate the issue through a selection of work that comments not only upon this history, but upon the possibility of a future located outside the conventional narrative history of art. Artists are encouraged to participate in panel discussions that will accompany the show.

Updates, and things.
I've been working on quite a few projects (what else is new?) I updated the website with pages for all of 2008's exhibits. Open call information is available for almost all of them. (We are still ironing out the specifics for the Children's art show, the Comic Art show, and the annual Juried show.) I also created an Exhibiting Artists 101 guide for artists new to submitting work at Altered Esthetics. In addition to the main website, I've also started to work on the online gallery. We'll be using phanfare for many of the images as it provides a clean, easy to navigate searchable platform. Each exhibit will have at least two sections of pictures: one of artwork images from the show, the other photographs of the exhibition itself. The Art of Sacrifice gallery is almost done and the Dia De Los Muertos online gallery is well on its way. Many of the exhibition photos themselves are already up. Each artwork image has to be titled and labeled appropriately, however, so it will be a lot of entry to get everything up. When everything is said and done, we'll have more than 1000 artwork images uploaded as well as the exhibition photos for the 25 exhibitions we've hosted so far. The site will be searchable - so you'll be able to search for your favorite artist, topic, or even media type. If you want to see how the site is going so far, you can view it at alteredesthetics.phanfare.com I'd love to hear anybody's feedback. Also, despite overwhelming odds and the stomach-sinking typos that tried to stop us, the 2008 Exhibition Calendar is at the printers and will be on it's way in time for the All American X-mas opening. We'll be selling the 12-month calendar for a suggested $5 donation. The Dia De Los Muertos show is going really really well. Gallery traffic throughout the week is steady and the exhibit has been really well received. The artists from this show are just amazing, and I'm so happy to work with this group. Dia De Los Muertos at Altered Esthetics
How bout I try to blog… once a week? Okay, I'll try. Last night - was so beautiful and so amazing. The Dia De Los Muertos show opened with the work of over 60 local and international artists. The room was full of marigolds, paper flowers, the smell of pan de muerto and chile mole, and the sangria was oh so refreshing. The entire first floor of the Q'arma building was packed with people. At about 8:00, approximately 100 folks gathered outside to begin the candlelight procession. I'll post the few pictures I was able to take as I ran around throughout the evening. Here are a few thoughts, since apparently I'm not able to write anything incredibly resounding or coherent: I'm so very grateful for the everybody involved. The artwork in the show is so full of meaning, beauty, and power - it really is an overwhelmingly wonderful exhibit. Not to single anybody out, but… Thank you to Jim for all of your work organizing the beautiful ofrenda. Thank you to Vicki for staying with us throughout the entire evening - it is such a joy to show your works. Thank you so much to Pati who co-curated the exhibit, you helped make the show 10 times as beautiful as it would have been otherwise. It wouldn't have been the same with out you, nor would curating have been nearly as fun (or nearly as crazy). Thanks to all of the interns who showed up to help - you are such an amazing, creative, and inspiring group to work with. I love the crazy energy all of you bring to the gallery. Thank you to everybody who came to the gallery and participated in the opening and especially those of you who participated in the Candlelight procession. Thank you to each and every individual artist for contributing such simultaneously sensitive, vibrant works of art. Last night will go down as truly one of the best nights in AE history… thank you for the strikingly beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. Thank you to my friends for understanding why I never get to go out and still calling me anyway. I'll post more pictures as soon as I can get them uploaded. Today.
I keep wanting to journal more, but I never really feel like I have anything hugely important to say unless I'm posting new show information, etc. Today I'll at least communicate the way I've been feeling about the gallery. Some of you know I also have a full time job at Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly. I'm very grateful to be a part of another wonderful nonprofit organization. No matter how busy my day there is, I am so excited when I get to the gallery and start the second part of my work day. My brain fizzles over with ideas and excitement as I check off items on my to-do list one by one. I've been sending out hundreds of e-mails, signing hundreds of letters, helping with bank and accounting issues, fundraising curating shows and working with our interns. And I'm so excited! I'm so excited there's absolutely no eloquent way to put it and I really don't know how to explain it. I don't get paid to do what I do for the gallery yet. I'm still in a tremendous amount of debt, I have no right car window because the plexiglass window broke and I don't have time to fix it, I can only open the front door 1/2 the time (the other half I have to reach around from the back seat), people that don't know me and don't know what I do e-mail me nasty things from time to time, other's email me nice things. And yet I still keep going, and I'm still excited. There's a fine line between passionate and crazy. As days go by, I'm starting to think I really might be crazy. ::hugs:: Here's my quote for the day. This is about as eloquent as I'll get. They told me I needed to go to other galleries, to other openings, to see what they were doing, to influence my decisions. Instead, I go out into the community and see what is needed, and base my decisions on that. |
